BREAKING: FG Bans Admission and Transfer into SS3 in Secondary Schools Across the country

The Federal Government has announced a nationwide ban on the admission and transfer of students into Senior Secondary School Three.

This directive affects all public and private secondary schools across Nigeria and marks a major shift in student placement policy.

Announced on Sunday, the decision, is aimed at tightening control within the secondary education system and addressing long-standing concerns surrounding final-year examinations.

Education authorities say the move will help restore discipline and credibility in senior secondary schooling.

The Federal Ministry of Education explained that the ban follows “growing concerns over the increasing incidence of examination malpractice, including the use of so-called special centres during external examinations.”

The ministry said such practices have continued to weaken public trust in Nigeria’s education system.

It noted that these activities “undermine the integrity and credibility of Nigeria’s education system,” especially at the senior secondary level where students prepare for national examinations.

The ministry disclosed that the policy will take effect from the 2026/2027 academic session. From that period, schools will only be allowed to admit or transfer students into SS1 and SS2.

“The policy will take effect from the next academic calendar 2026/27 with admissions and transfers now restricted strictly to Senior Secondary School One (SS1) and Senior Secondary School Two (SS2),” the ministry stated. It added that “Admission or transfer into SS3 will no longer be permitted under any circumstance.”

Explaining the rationale behind the decision, the ministry said the ban targets the growing trend of students switching schools late in their secondary education for examination advantages.

“The measure is aimed at discouraging last-minute movement of students for examination-related advantages, ensuring proper academic monitoring, and promoting continuity in teaching and learning,” the statement read.

School proprietors, principals, and administrators nationwide have been directed to comply fully with the new policy. The ministry warned that violations would not be overlooked.

“Any violation will attract appropriate sanctions in line with existing education regulations and guidelines,” it added.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to education reforms, the ministry said the directive forms part of broader efforts to strengthen academic standards and promote fairness in public examinations across the country.
